Natural shampoos have a lot of benefits. Lots of people prefer products that are natural and therefore “green.” Others find that their hair is healthier when cleaned with natural ingredients. Natural shampoo is often found to be easier on dyed hair. You might also want to use natural shampoos because they can also serve as soothing body washes.
Of course some companies use the word natural in a deceptive way. Occasionally it does simply mean natural ingredients. Natural ingredients can mean nearly anything that has been derived from nature. As a result the shampoo can contain a few natural ingredients and a lot of unnatural ones. Generally a few preservatives and a little dye can be okay. If you do have sensitive skin though you could have more trouble with colors and fragrances. The serious ingredients to look for are the ones that may actually undo the positive benefits of the real natural ingredients.
Always keep an eye out for laureth sulfate. This is what causes shampoo foam. In addition, though, it will strip your hair. The result over a short time is weak, brittle hair. Also, it will destroy color treatments. Lightened, dull hair results from excessive lauryl sulfate use. Anything with the words Lauryl or Laureth should be avoided.
Also, you should keep an eye out for sulfur and sulfides. These are common in dandruff shampoos. It is certainly reasonably to argue that sulfur is natural. But in some cases it can make skin conditions worse and cause dandruff. Sulfur based shampoos must be kept out of your eyes. Your hair may also be drier than usual.
Truly natural shampoos share some common characteristics:
* They have few ingredients - Most of the ingredients that go in shampoos are artificial. Most natural shampoo products just contain a soap base and minimal other ingredients.
* You get little foam with natural shampoo - This is because they lack the foaming agents we discussed earlier.
* They often have ingredients you would expect to see in your kitchen - You might see apple cider vinegar, herbs and baking soda. Actually a lot of people wash their hair using vinegar, baking soda and water.
If you already have perfect hair, then you should stick with what you are doing! If you are looking for a new natural shampoo, though, be sure that you are getting the real deal. The secret ingredients that we discussed can cause serious damage. Make sure that your natural shampoo is the real thing before you start shampooing.
